The honest answer: Kenya is remarkable year-round. There is no "bad" time to visit — just different experiences. Understanding the seasonal rhythm helps you match your trip to the wildlife events and weather patterns you want most.
July – October: The Prime Season
This is Kenya's dry season and the peak of the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara. Wildlife concentrates around water sources, making game viewing outstanding across all parks. The Mara River crossings — when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-infested water — peak between August and early October.
Best for: Great Migration river crossings, Big Five, all parks
Weather: Dry, sunny, cool mornings (12–15°C), warm afternoons (25–28°C)
Crowds & prices: Peak season — book camps well in advance
January – February: The Calving Season
The Migration herds are in Tanzania's Serengeti for the calving season — 8,000 wildebeest born every day creates an extraordinary predator spectacle. In Kenya, Amboseli is excellent with good Kilimanjaro views. Fewer tourists, lower prices.
Best for: Amboseli elephants, Samburu, fewer crowds
Weather: Warm and mostly dry with some coastal rain
March – May: The Long Rains
Kenya's long rainy season — dramatic skies, lush green landscapes and dramatically reduced visitor numbers. Some bush roads become muddy. An authentic, uncrowded safari experience for the adventurous traveller — with significantly lower rates.
Best for: Budget travel, photography (dramatic skies), birding
Weather: Afternoon showers most days, roads can be challenging
June: The Short Dry Season Begins
June marks the beginning of the dry season. The Mara starts to dry out and wildlife begins to concentrate. Migration herds start arriving in the northern Serengeti heading toward Kenya. An excellent, slightly quieter month before the July peak.
November – December: The Short Rains
Short, sharp afternoon showers — rarely all-day rain. Parks are lush and green. Good game viewing, particularly in Tsavo and Amboseli. Christmas and New Year are popular with higher prices; early November is quieter.
