The highest of the Rift Valley Lakes north west of Nairobi, this freshwater lake is 1890 above sea level. This vast mass of water extends like the ocean and is hugged by vegetation consisting of cacti and sand olive trees. The lake is home to a variety of wildlife with the most prominent being the hippos that play along the water’s edge. Extensive water bird life sees plenty of cormorants, fish eagles and king fishers.

Crescent Island is a private island sanctuary that can be reached by boat or driving across narrow road from Sanctuary Farm. Here you can walk amongst grass eaters such as giraffes, zebra, waterbucks and impala. If you are really, privileged you may even have a sighting of a leopard. This is a great spot for a picnic lunch.

You can also visit Hell’s Gate National Park, and see the dramatic Ol Jorowa Gorge, its sheer towering cliffs and volcanic plugs known as Central and Fisher’s Towers. Game is not abundant, but small population’s plains zebra, buffalo, eland, hartebeest, topi and impala. Over 100 species of birds have been recorded in the park.
